Kaltura: Getting Started Guide
Kaltura is actually 2 different tools:
- Kaltura Capture is an application (app) for Mac and Windows that allows you to record your computer's screen, camera, and/or microphone.
- Kaltura MediaSpace is a web application for media management. Within Kaltura MediaSpace, you can edit your recording and add captions. After you’ve finished editing your recording, you use MediaSpace to host and share it.
Benefits of Using Kaltura
- Canvas Integration: At the University of Minnesota, Kaltura MediaSpace media repository is integrated with Canvas. If you upload a video to Kaltura MediaSpace, it will be available for use in both MediaSpace and Canvas. This Canvas integration makes sharing recordings with your students a much more secure process than other media hosting platforms.
- Accessibility: Kaltura offers more accurate auto-captioning and caption editing features than other recording hosting platforms.
- Analytics: Kaltura’s Canvas integration provides instructors with learning analytics data including the number of times a video has been watched in a course.
- Student Experience: If you require your students to use Kaltura MediaSpace to host and submit their recordings for your class, they will be learning the same tool used by you, their instructor. You will be better able to assist your students with basic tech questions if you’re using the same technology. Student recordings will also be more securely shared, which helps keep you in compliance with FERPA and student copyright.
